In Islam there are 3 types of unseen beings (makhluk ghaib), first is the angels(malaikat), second is satan/devil (iblis/syaitan), and third is genie (djin/jin). The angels were created by Allah from light (cahaya), the devil from fire (api), the jin from smoke and human (Nabi Adam) from soil (tanah). Based on your question jin is actually the same wether the tanah or whatever, the same when we refer to any human beings, we have asian, african, european, latino and etc. They (jin) are certainly not the angels (malaikat) or guardian of certain places.
